LATER THAN SOONER
Here I am marking another anniversary
Of the day my mother brought me in this world
Another digit in the sequence of ascending numbers
Watching time slip by me in a blur
I can’t keep from feeling smothered by the smoke that takes my breath
Coming from the candles on my cake
Long in the tooth and long game running short on time
Leaves me wondering how it got so late
It’s later than sooner, time is slipping through my hands
I don’t know how it happened
But the tide’s washed away my line in the sand and
It’s later than sooner, I wish that I could understand
This long shadow of a younger man
It’s already evening here comes the moon
I wish I’d have known that later comes before soon
Here I am in my 57th winter
Somehow I’m always shocked that it’s so cold
Another year’s slipped by it almost went unnoticed
I wonder how on earth I got to be so old
It’s later than sooner, time is slipping through my hands
I don’t know how it happened
But the tide’s washed away my line in the sand and
It’s later than sooner, I wish that I could understand
This long shadow of a younger man
Cause it’s already evening here comes the moon
I wish I’d have known that later comes before
Soon or later it all comes to pass
I’ll be just a footnote in time
Until then I’ll make each day that I last
Like it’s the last one of my life
It’s later than sooner, time is slipping through my hands
I don’t know how it happened
But the tide’s washed away my line in the sand and
It’s later than sooner, I wish that I could understand
This long shadow of a younger man
Cause it’s already evening here comes the moon
I wish I’d have known that later comes before
